Our Focus

In selecting investments, we choose individual leaders over institutions, creators over consultants, and entrepreneurs over executives.  We believe capital can be a catalyst for scaled impact and that enterprises generating revenue can ultimately help the most people.

Traditionally, there are two funding models for social enterprises. Non-profit organizations can become dependent on philanthropic donations. For-profit companies that are venture-backed sacrifice long-term impact to satisfy the short-term profit requirements of their investors.

Understanding the constraints inherent to both models, we offer a third path.

Our Approach

We believe that self-sustaining enterprises are best positioned to attract and retain talent, take advantage of business opportunities, and activate new markets. With sufficient time and resources, social enterprises can reduce the costs of their products and services to provide greater global access. Based on the stage of the enterprise, we provide philanthropic investment and support for the entrepreneurial leader.

In addition to making program-related investments, we also provide traditional grant funding. Our best grant example is the work of Dr. David Shaye through Project Life International, described in greater detail below. By training and equipping surgeons who can then train and equip more surgeons, there is lasting impact and leverage in his work.

Finally, we provide funding for scientists, engineers, and entrepreneurs working to turn their innovations into self-sustaining and scaled enterprises for the betterment of humanity.

Since our first board meeting in January 2022, we have committed funding to 22 organizations.

AuxHealth is a generative AI company developing a platform to collect and document patient information. By reducing the clerical load on the clinical team, AuxHealth enables them to reduce administrative burden while providing better care to more patients.

Our program-related investment of $2,000,000 will enable the development of the AuxHealth platform, including careful consideration and design for future applications in low-resourced settings.

Flare coordinates emergency services, reducing ambulance response times from as long as 3 hours to as little as 15 minutes. They accomplish this by establishing partnerships and by adding intelligent platform technology to existing emergency infrastructure like ambulances, clinics, and hospitals. In doing so, Flare improves survival rates and emergency outcomes for underserved populations.

Our program-related investment enables Flare to expand access to emergency services and critical care to additional countries.

Their workflow automation platform is used in over 40 countries and recognized as both a Digital Public Good and a Global Good for Health.

Our program-related investment of $2,000,000 enables OpenFn to make enhancements to their technology to reach a broader community of social sector organizations, lowering the barrier to entry for automation projects in low and middle-income countries.

Hydrocephalus patients require invasive procedures in order to determine if their shunt is performing properly. Rhaeos is solving this problem by developing a non-invasive solution that includes a wireless, thermal sensor designed to rapidly monitor shunt function.

Sibel Health was founded by leading engineers and scientists to gather and deliver better health data through their clinical grade, flexible, bio-integrated sensors. Their sensors can be used to provide patient monitoring in any environment via mobile devices and cloud based technology. Additionally, Sibel’s sensors and technology are specifically designed to integrate with low cost, off-the-shelf tablets.

Our program-related investment of $25,000,000 enables Sibel to manufacture and distribute wireless monitoring devices and technology at scale while driving down costs to make their sensors affordable to lower resourced countries.

Low resourced countries often rely on paper-based reports and electronic data that comes from multiple organizations in many different formats. This challenge often leads to the inefficient allocation of very limited resources. Zenysis created an interoperability software platform to collect all the data that a country receives and organize it in a useful way. For example, governments around the world use Zenysis software to reach “zero dose” children in their vaccine campaigns to ensure that help is delivered where it is most needed.

Our program-related investment of $13,000,000 enables Zenysis to continue to develop its platform and deliver it in lower income countries.

Inspired by the specialized surgical work that Dr. Shaye was performing in Rwanda, the Steele family provided funding to support his work from 2017 through 2021. In April of 2022, we invited Dr. Shaye to expand his reach by establishing an operating foundation.  During the next 12 months, we provided legal, tax, and accounting resources to help the Shaye family create Project Life International.  In July of 2023, we committed $3,000,000 of grant funding for Dr. Shaye’s work. As he operates on patients, he is teaching surgeons from low resourced countries the procedures they will need to know.  Project Life equips the newly trained surgeons with specialized instruments so that they can perform the procedures in their home countries.  We expect these surgeons will go on to train and equip more surgeons.

ProjectLife also builds and staffs learning centers and libraries for children in clinics and hospitals, which is already proving to speed up recovery for children receiving care.
